Tapper shows her class at the Ballarat Open

Another weekend, another tournament!

The Ballarat Open Senior and Junior tournament took place at the Ballarat Table Tennis Association with plenty of success for entrants across the weekend.

On Saturday, the seniors kicked proceedings off and Milly Tapper made her presence known, taking out the Open Women’s Singles title winning all of her matches and displaying a level of class during her matches.

In the Open Men’s Singles, it was to be Yugandh Zende’s day, defeating a valiant Zach Anstey in the final.

Anstey, however, showed some dominant display across the day, playing eleven matches on one table leading to wins in the Open Mixed Doubles, Open Men’s Doubles and Twenties Singles while also runner-up in the Division 1 Singles.

Ellen Walker also had some success across the day, taking out titles in the U/21 & O/30 Mixed Doubles, Open Mixed Doubles and Division 2 Singles while also runner-up in the Women’s Doubles and Open Women’s Singles.

In some of the other categories, Trevor Hirth took out the Para Singles, Harsh Madaan won the Over 30’s Men’s Singles and Kate Carmichael in the Over 30’s Women’s Singles.

The juniors rounded out the weekend with a spread of winners across the various categories.

In the U/19 and U/17 Girls Singles, Yi-Jen Hsu took home both titles, playing some dominant table tennis only dropping one set in the 19’s and winning in straight sets in the 17’s.

Colin Chen had a good day, winning the U/17’s Boys’ Singles and the Division 1 Singles with runner-up Oscar Teakle also winning the Division 2 Singles and U/19 Boys’ Doubles with Anthony Silk taking out the U/19 Boys’ Singles title.

In some of the other age groups, Arvin Yeung took home medals in the U/17 & 19 Mixed Doubles and U/15 Boys’ Doubles while Maggie Lyu took home the U/11 Girls’ Singles and U/11 Girl’s Doubles.

“The Ballarat Seniors saw the emergence of the next Brian Berry - we all know the one, the player that is in 2 or 3 events and just doesn't lose”, said Tournament Director Claire Montgomery.

“Zac Anstey from Loops rounded off the day with a phenomenal 11 matches in a row without a break!”.

“The Juniors had some top-quality matches and excellent results all round. With their highest entry numbers since the 90's, the Ballarat volunteers really came together to help run a very smooth event”.

The next tournament on the calendar is the 2023 S-Trend Victorian Open happening at the Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium on April 15-16.
