Shibaji Datta and Victoria Zhang Win the Open Men’s & Women’s at Bendigo

Tarneit’s Shibaji Datta and Croydon’s Victoria Zhang have won the Open divisions at the 2022 Bendigo Open Championships over the weekend.
Datta had an impressive unbeaten run on his way to his first state circuit title of the year. After topping his group stage, he went on to beat Coburg pair Raymond Myrteza and Zachary Anstey in straight sets before taking down another Coburg player Rhys Thomas in the final.
Victoria Zhang also took out her first open category title of the year with a victory in the Open Women’s singles. She also won the U/17 Girl’s singles, while her sister Serena made her way through the U/15 Girl’s field before beating fellow Croydon player Esme Ho in the final.
It was a day for siblings as Albury Wodonga’s Levi Geering also defeated his brother Max in the U/19 Boys final, adding to his victory in the U/17’s as well as a second-place finish in the U/15 Boy’s where he went down to Loops’ Siddarth Anand in four sets.
Zachary Anstey made his way through the 20’s Men’s Singles undefeated, while Raymond Myrteza dropped a solitary set on his way to a win in the U/21’s Men’s Singles.
In other results from Saturday, Esme Ho (U/13 Girl’s), Aiden Tang (U/13 Boy’s), Ollie Xia (U/11 Boy’s), Qinle Alice Xia (U/11 Girl’s) and Samarth Singh (U/9’s Singles) all won titles to round out the junior results.
Shibaji kept up his great form heading into the Veterans Open on Sunday winning the O/30’s Men’s singles against Partha Gogoi (Coburg) as well as winning the O/40 Men’s singles. While Croydon’s Aviva Brindley went through the O/30’s Women’s Singles undefeated to take home the title.
South Australia’s Kevin Malyschko made the trip over to Bendigo winning three titles including the O/60 Men’s singles and the O/50 & O/60 Men’s doubles with his brother David.
Ballarat’s Bob Bowler also won a trio of titles with victories in the O/70 and O/75 Men’s singles and O/70 Men’s doubles, while Geelong’s Debbie Wilson took home a pair of titles with wins in the O/60 Women’s singles and doubles.
Rounding out the rest of the singles titles were Lynette Buckby (O/40 Women’s), David Segal (O/50 Men’s), Belgin Bennet (O/50 Women’s), George Abdilla (O/65 Men’s), Judy James (O/65 Women’s) and Case De Bondt (O/80 & O/85 Men’s).
“It was fantastic to get up to the Bendigo Open on Sunday and see the Veterans competition in full swing,” said TTV CEO Gen Dohrmann.
