AUSTRALIA SECURES QUALIFICATION FOR THE PARIS OLYMPICS 2024

Published Mon 04 Sep 2023

All players and coaches had ear to ear grins on their faces after both the women's and the men's team dominated the Oceania Olympic Team Qualification Tournament in Townsville.

Neither the women (3-0 vs NZL & 3-0 vs FIJ), nor the men (3-0 vs MIS), 3-0 vs FIJ & 3-0 vs NZL) dropped a single game. As a result, Australia will get to send the maximum athlete quota of three players per gender to Paris.

The women's team was first to secure the team spot after beating New Zealand in three straight games. Min Hyung Jee, Jian Fang Lay, Melissa Tapper, Michelle Bromley and Constantina Psihogios then followed up with a 3-0 victory against Fiji to seal the Olympic berth for the women's team.

On the men's side Aditya Sareen, Xavier Dixon, Dillon Chambers, Finn Luu and Nicholas Lum wasted no time in beating Marshall Islands and Fiji 3-0 each. In the third match of the round robin, New Zealand proved to be a tough rival. Finn Luu paved the way with an 11-9, 14-12, 11-4 win over Roger Wang. Dillon Chambers and Nicholas Lum then followed up with two hard-fought wins over Timothy Choi and Alfred de la Pena to secure the clean sheet victory.

In an absolute nail biter of a final Min Hyung Jee and Nicholas Lum secured their personal spots in the Australian 2024 Paris Olympic Games Team! Min and Nick were trailing 1-3 against their Aussie teammates Jian Fang Lay and Finn Luu before fighting their way back to a 7-set victory with the narrowest of margins, 11-9. Congratulations Min and Nicholas!

Congratulations to all of the players!
