73rd Country Championships Review

The 73rd Victorian Country Table Tennis Championships, held over the King’s Birthday Weekend in Traralgon, brought together the best players from across regional Victoria for a thrilling showcase of skill, determination, and sportsmanship.
TTV CEO Gen Dohrmann opened the tournament with Latrobe City Mayor Cr Dale Harriman to welcome the 78 teams ahead of a massive weekend of competition. During these proceedings it was an absolute honour to award Dirk Holwerda as the 2024 Andrew Wilson Memorial Award recipient.
The Andrew Wilson Memorial Award is awarded to the player from the Country Championships who best displays dedication to the sport, team spirit, impeccable demeanour, and is a worthy ambassador for table tennis in regional Victoria. It is named in honour of the late Andrew Wilson who was a country player who exemplified team spirit and gentlemanly conduct, the country championships was one of Andrews favourite tournaments. To this day, Andrew is still missed dearly by those who knew and were close to him.
This iconic annual event once again proved why it holds a special place in the hearts of the table tennis community. Players of all ages and abilities competed across a variety of singles, doubles, and team events, with the electric atmosphere underscoring the passion for the sport in regional areas.
“The Victorian Country Championships are a testament to the incredible talent and camaraderie within our regional table tennis community,” said Table Tennis Victoria CEO Gen Dohrmann.
“This year’s event was a perfect blend of competitive spirit and community connection, and we’re proud to continue supporting this historic tournament.”
There was some fantastic results seen throughout the weekend. In A grade, the Albury Wodonga team of Levi and Max Geering and Sam Palmer went undefeated in 4 rounds to claim the Mark Smith Shield from Geelong who have held it for the previous 4 years.
In B1, Melton edged out a fierce grade to claim victory with 3 other teams finishing with 3 wins right behind them.
A massive congratulations to all teams on their incredible efforts and performances throughout the weekend.

In the individuals, Danica Alburo defeated Divya Mallya in the Open Women’s Singles Final to take home the trophy.
In the Men’s Open Singles Sam Palmer defeated Christian Abendan in straight sets to claim some more silverware to add to his Alan Cleaves medal from the teams A grade division.

Congratulations to all participants, volunteers, and officials for making the 2025 Victorian Country Table Tennis Championships a resounding success. In particular we would like to thank Mark Strini and all the members from Traralgon TTA who helped with set up and pack down of the tournament, along with JJ's Photography for all the photos throughout the tournament.
