The 71st anniversary of Table Tennis Victoria’s Country Championships is taking place this weekend at the Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium (GRISS).

The Victorian Country Championships, nicknamed ‘Country Week’, is adored by Victorian Table Tennis players for the fun nature and team environment with the marquee event having some of the best and most-loved memories amongst TTV’s yearly tournaments.

The 2023 Victorian Country Championships will be held over the Queen’s Birthday or now known as the King's Birthday long weekend from June 10-12 at GRISS, the first time the tournament will be held in Traralgon.

Country table tennis clubs and associations from across Victoria will be striving to bring home the perpetual shields and trophies. There will be teams from Albury and Ballarat to Bairnsdale, Leongatha, Wonthaggi and Yarrawonga have been rallying the troops for the three-day event with teams spread out over 11 grades. Players will also play in an Individual Tournament.

Teams for the Country Championships consist of 3 players with all players listed required to play in singles games of a team match to be eligible to play the individual tournament.

The team format will consist of nine singles and two doubles matches and all matches are the best of five games.

The Individual Tournament will include a variety of events in knockout format.

While the competition aspect is important and everyone wants to win the Shield, plenty of people will tell you the atmosphere is what they love most about Country Week.

One of those being John Wright from Yarrawonga/ Mulwala Table Tennis Association, who has been rallying the troops for the tournament, expressed his excitement for the weekend.

"Going down to catch up with all the other teams and playing against all the people from each town while also meeting new people during the tournament is always something I look forward to," Wright said.

"But at the end of each day, kicking back and having a few drinks with your teammates and having a chat is always another nice aspect to the weekend."

"I'm looking forward to being apart of running the tournament with Claire Montgomery, we work really well together and I've actually set her up, we're going to be playing in the mixed doubles together! We'll also be wearing something very interesting, so keep an eye out for that!"

TTV’s CEO Gen Dohrmann, couldn’t be more excited about 71st edition of the Victorian Country Championships.

“We had such a successful event in Traralgon with the Victorian Open, the facilities, equipment and access to the building was first-class and we are excited to bring the same experience to all who are participating in the Country Championships,” said Dohrmann.

“We are looking forward to having nearly 300 people through the doors at GRISS and we have engaged with local businesses to let them know table tennis is coming to town!"

Table Tennis Victoria has connected with some local businesses in the community to try and provide food and beverage partners who will offer discounts to our Country Championships attendees, for more information on those discounts, head to the link at the bottom of the page.
