52nd Metropolitan Championships Review

The 52nd Victorian Metropolitan Championships lit up the King’s Birthday Weekend with exhilarating matches held across Croydon and Dandenong. Featuring an impressive lineup of metropolitan players, this year’s tournament underscored the depth of talent in the sport across Melbourne. 

Players from clubs all over the city came together to compete in singles, doubles, and team events with record breaking entries of 124 teams and 403 players.   

"The 2025 Victorian Metro Table Tennis Championships showcased the incredible depth of talent across our region" mentioned Tournament Director Greg Bristowe. 

"From emerging juniors to seasoned competitors, the level of play was outstanding." 

"It’s inspiring to see our community growing stronger each year, and this tournament is a true celebration of the sport we all love” added Bristowe. 

In the teams events, Croydon had a very successful showing in the A1 Grade, dominating to win 21 matches with 0 losses from the team of Sanish Ambekar, Zhongye Alex Huang and Dillon Chambers 

In A2, the Coburg contingent of Craig Carter, Rocky Chen, Raymond Myrteza and Rhys Thomas won the day winning 3-0 against the other teams. 

Scorpio took home the A3 Grade with their team of Andy Song, Victoria Zhang, Zhongwan Huang and Sithichok Vipawatanakul leading them to a 3-0 victory.

Over to the individual events, where Dillon Chambers took home the Men’s Singles trophy after defeating Yugandh Zende 4-0, and not dropping a single match during the event. 

Ellen Walker claimed victory in the Women’s Singles also winning 4-0 over Swetha Sundaresan.  

Across at Dandenong, Anthony Majtlis won the Para Singles event defeating both Mark Nimmervoll and John Savinov.

Thanks to the outstanding efforts of the Croydon and Dandenong Table Tennis Associations, the championships were flawlessly executed, providing players with high-quality facilities and a welcoming atmosphere. In particular we would like to thank the tournament team of Greg Bristowe, Kameron Chan, Shahram Aminzadeh & Bruce Doughty for their efforts throughout the weekend.  

Congratulations to all competitors, with special recognition to the teams and individual champions who displayed exceptional skill and determination to claim their titles. We look forward to building on this success and welcoming the metro table tennis community back for the 2026 edition!
