Take it to the Table to celebrate World Table Tennis Day

Published Sun 23 Apr 2023

Table Tennis Victoria is asking Victorians to take it to the table and join their local club or association with a marketing campaign launching on Sunday 23 April to mark World Table Tennis Day.

World Table Tennis Day has been celebrated annually since 2015. It is a day to celebrate table tennis and the universality and social inclusiveness the sport represents.

World Table Tennis Day celebrates the joy of playing table tennis for fun, bringing people together, focusing less on competition and more on participation and enjoyment.

Table tennis is the second most played sport in the world with an estimated 300 million players including 85 million regular players in China. In Australia, Roy Morgan research from 2018 found approximately 979,000 Australians engage with the sport of table tennis.

Victoria is the largest state table tennis body in Australia with approximately 60 affiliated clubs and associations and over 4,000 annual individual members (competitive and social registered players).

In 2022 the number of registered table tennis participants was 54,504 and this campaign is an effort to bridge the pipeline between participants and members to increase opportunities to access table tennis.

Table Tennis Victoria CEO Gen Dohrmann is pleased to be able to use her marketing and communications background within the sport of table tennis.

“Table tennis is truly a sport for all with opportunities to play for all ages, abilities and backgrounds. Plenty of people enjoy playing table tennis and aren’t linked to clubs or associations so we’d love to see them take it to the table at their local club or association,” said Dohrmann.

The campaign has launched with a take it to the table logo and the call to action being featured in a campaign video which was shot at the 2023 Victorian Open last weekend featuring current players challenging Victorians to take it to the table.

All Victorian table tennis clubs and associations have been provided with marketing resources (posters, social media tiles, marketing guidelines etc.) to assist with the campaign and allow them to promote their programs within their local community.
